General Information

Research at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia

Research at NUMed began in 2015 with appointment of a Dean of Research to oversee the research agenda. The research themes that NUMed has chosen to focus on, have developed over the last 5 years and have largely been selected based on need and opportunity in Malaysia combined with the international funding landscape and expertise of the NUMed research faculty.

The research team at NUMed now comprises 10 researchers from UK and Malaysia. We work together across our respective disciplines to create impactful projects that address local need.  We also work with collaborators elsewhere in Malaysia at higher education institutions and health care facilities, but also work Internationally with Universities and Health Institutions across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and South America.

Much of the work we undertake with our collaborators in Malaysia and Worldwide is aimed at tackling the United Nations Sustainability Goal Challenges.  Working together in this way has facilitated exchange of people, ideas, practice and technology and has allowed solutions to common problems to be found cost effectively and more efficiently.  We have hosted PhD students and post docs from UK and Malaysia and hope to host more researchers in the near future.  Over the last 3 years we have also employed recent graduates/early career researchers who have joined our team to work on existing projects gaining much needed laboratory and field work experience prior to undertaking masters and PhD programmes.
